γνῶθι σεαυτόν

Former Student of the Ecole Normale Supérieure (Ulm, Paris), french philosopher, clinical psychologist, doctor in psychopathology (PhD).

Expert and speaker in psychopathology and political philosophy, Ariane Bilheran wrote many books in philosophy, psychology, psychopathology, literature for adults and children.

A pioneering work:

apply a psychopathological reading key to totalitarianism

Preamble: Psychopolitics

"At the root of my journey, there was the desire to understand the 'banality of evil' (H. Arendt, Eichmann in Jerusalem ). I committed who I am to it very early on, with determination, constancy and a desire to plumb the depths. I made a promise to myself, that of contributing, in my own way, to a humanity freed from its shackles, which implies fighting for the protection of the most vulnerable and their integrity. My research, my analyses, the concepts that result from them and which are part of an original way in a demanding demonstration and a singular approach, appear in my articles, my books and the numerous interviews that I have given to different media. I have made them available to people for their right to self-determination, and initially for the French people, my homeland of origin.

I don't authorize my concepts, which are part of the coherence and evolution of my thinking within my work, to be used without my written authorization, for commercial purposes, by unscrupulous individuals, outside the traditional rules of explicit quotation (short quotation from the author, and source, see editorial rules). A concept is not just a vulgar collection of words: it has a definition, a history, an intellectual context. It sometimes took months of work, even years, to be able to identify and then accurately name a certain reality.

While I am happy that my concepts, for some ('totalitarian surge' and 'totalitarian drift' to name the totalitarianism of the 'political pandemic' of Covid, 'delusional contagion', 'four pillars of civilization',etc.), have had the destiny of a common appropriation by the people for their emancipation, I wish on the other hand to be consistent here with my commitment to integrity, and this integrity cannot suffer from a rewriting of history concerning the work of a lifetime, which crooks monopolize and distort for their own benefits, to the detriment of my moral commitments on the subjects of child protection and totalitarianism.

My areas of investigation, and sometimes even of original creation, are the following: moral and political philosophy, philosophy of law, psychopathology at work, psychopathology of power (including manipulation and perversion), psychopathology of totalitarianism, psychopathology of paranoia, psychopathology of authority.

In 2025, I decided to bring my research together under the concept of PSYCHOPOLITIC, which refers to my investigations into the psychological balances and imbalances of individual and collective power".

Genesis of the
Psychopathology of Totalitarianism

"To investigate the different paths that could allow me to understand what underlies this 'banality of evil', and after years of investigation devoted to totalitarian islets in companies, to the study of perversion as processes that pass through individuals, groups, organisations, peoples and states, I set out to create links between the disciplines that fascinated me and to explore a still virgin territory, which I called the 'psychopathology of totalitarianism'.

It was a question of resuming in my way the intellectual weaving of the work where Hannah Arendt had stopped it: on this impasse of the 'banality of evil'. What, then, would psychopathology—a discipline that studies the psychic processes at work, rather than relying on the stigmatization of labels, nosographic categories, or the essentialization of concepts—have to say about the totalitarian phenomenon? In doing so, I have spent years considerably deepening our psychological knowledge of this phenomenon, until then confined to sociopolitical analysis, the observation of submission to authority and the behavioral description of crowds.

This represents my intellectual contribution to the study of totalitarianism, following a path which, as far as I know, had not previously been explored in this way—through the systemic articulation of the individual and the group.

I then created several concepts to refine this still virgin theoretical field, concepts that I put to the test of field observation and the clinic for years, to make them evolve gradually. From this point of view, the political pandemic of COVID has offered me a 'life-size' experimentation of this 'banality of evil', if I may say so. My original vision now imposes itself as an unavoidable approach, with a paradigm of past concepts in everyday language, such as 'totalitarian surge', 'delusional contagion', 'psychic regression', 'totalitarian drift', 'regressed group', etc.

Yet, nothing was less obvious than to conceive a psychopathology of totalitarianism, at the crossroads of psychopathology, political philosophy, the philosophy of Law and metaphysics.

In psychological observations, political philosophy had indeed stopped at the 'banality of evil' raised by Hannah Arendt at Eichmann’s trial. Psychoanalysis and the psychology of crowds, for their part, with some authors like Freud and Lebon, had issued diagnoses of mad tyrants and their hypnotic operation on the masses. There was the political ponerology of Andrew M. Lobaczewski on psychopathy.

None of these works explained totalitarianism from the perspective of a regressive system, where narcissistic pathologies (paranoia and perversion in the first place) are honored and create alliances, and even less how the totalitarian spider’s web is interwoven by different psychic processes, which it was necessary to identify, qualify, and list, to refine their definition and conceptualization.

My contribution above all is to have summoned this traditional psychopathology, by diagnosing totalitarianism as a collective paranoiac moment, to apply it to totalitarianism, to the masses.

That being said, it wasn’t enough for me either. I had to explain, and this is the point on which I have been working for years, the precise mechanisms of this 'delusional contagion'. uthors long before me had spoken of a 'virus' (H. Arendt), an 'infection' (V. Klemperer), and a totalitarian epidemic (A. Camus). Klemperer, the philologist who studied the language of the Nazis, was undoubtedly the one who came closest to the core of the problem, diagnosing the existence—without, however, being able to name its precise nature-of a general psychiatric condition affecting the population, which allowed itself to be overtaken by the Führer’s delusion, quite literally.

Conclusion

Doctor in psychopathology and clinical psychology, political philosopher Ariane Bilheran is an essential reference in the study of totalitarianism and the psychopathology of power. Her concepts provide essential insights for understanding and identifying contemporary mechanisms of oppression and systemic abuses.

Ariane Bilheran has been engaged for years in an intellectual and moral approach aimed at understanding and dissecting the mechanisms of totalitarianism, harassment and manipulation. Her research is structured around key concepts that she has forged from years of analysis and observation. She has conducted in-depth research on the psychopathology of totalitarianism, harassment, authority, manipulation and psychosocial risks, publishing numerous books and academic articles, and speaking at various international conferences.

Ariane Bilheran's public stance today is that of an intellectual, who firmly maintains her positions despite adversity. She favors a strategy of cultural resistance, rather than legal or institutional, by continuing to disseminate her ideas through alternative channels.

She adopts a free thought in the face of dominant dogmas, based on her dual expertise in psychopathology and political philosophy in order to contribute to the emancipation of minds, through her in-depth decryption of the mechanisms of totalitarianism, paranoia, perversion, harassment and manipulation. She insists on the deconstruction of official narratives and ideologies, and emphasizes the importance of intellectual freedom in the face of attempts to marginalize, instrumentalize or recover her work.
