"Late on the longest day of May, when the night hours are blue, embroidered with old silver, to enter Florence for the first time at twenty, and to say to oneself at every step, with a leap of the heart ahead of the mind: 'Florence, I am in Florence!' these are the kinds of celebrations that one never finds again, and that one seeks to return to, ever more eagerly, in the heart of life."

André Suarès, Voyage du condottiere.

When I organize the Philosophical Academies in Florence, I always try to arrive a little early, for several reasons. First, Florence is a city I love to explore alone, in the manner of my dear André Suarès, and preferably when the tourist crowds have dispersed, at the break of dawn, when sunrise peeks over the Arno, or at night.
