When the Greek philosopher Aristotle said that man is a "political animal", did he truly grasp the full scope of considerations to which this simple expression could lead us? In my last issue of Licorne (No. 26, "The Undesirables of Totalitarianism"), I discussed the totalitarian onslaught targeting the undesirables—in this case, today, French farmers and livestock breeders who have refused to surrender everything to large industrial farms. What does this affair reveal about the mistreatment inherent in our society, and what does it also reveal about our relationship with animals? It is to this delicate exploration that I invite you, an uncomfortable exploration that confronts us with our denials and commits us to discernment, one of my wishes for the year 2026.
